natural recovery tips for surviving a big night out

So you’ve succumbed to the fun and frivolity of the work Christmas party and now you feel like you have been hit by a semi-trailer.

Sound familiar? Yep, we’ve all been there (and will probably go there again!). So rather than beating yourself up over the extra indulgences of excess alcohol and not so healthy party food, why not take heed of our 5 recovery tips to bring back your mojo…

Rehydrate: Alcohol is a major dehydrator so a large part of your hangover symptoms can be a lack of liquid (and we don’t mean more alcohol!) as well as low blood sugar levels. After you’ve downed a couple of glasses of fresh water, try making a fruit smoothie with a base of coconut water. Coconut water contains potassium, sodium and other trace minerals to replenish your electrolytes. Adding some healthy fats such as avocado, coconut oil, nuts and seeds along with some fresh fruit and leafy greens, will give your body enough sustenance without being too heavy on the digestion.

Supplement: You’ll be pleased to know that even though over-indulgences can tax the liver, irritate the gut, mess with hormones and strip your body of essential nutrients, there are certain supplements that have been found to make you feel a little better. Here are our top 3:

  • Intra Strength by Prana On: In a base of coconut water with turmeric, branch chain amino acids, vitamins C, B and glutamine, this superfood blend will fuel your body naturally with nitrates, Electrolytes, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Available in Pomegranate, Blood Orange and Coconut Ice flavours.
  • Eden Health Food Steam Activated Charcoal: Derived from coconut shell fibre, it is a medicinal grade, neutral pH powder that can used for cleansing and drawing out toxins. Many people swear by taking some activated charcoal the night of, and the morning after, a big party to use as a preventative and a cure.
  • Synergy Super Greens Powder: This combination of spirulina (rich in B vitamins), wheatgrass, chlorella and barley grass will help cleanse and detoxify the body, as well as restoring the essential B vitamins often depleted by alcohol.

A Protein Rich Brunch (once the smoothie settles): A healthy protein rich brunch of eggs, organic sausages or bacon, asparagus (high in amino acids that stimulate key enzymes that can break down the alcohol into a “non-toxic” acetate) on some sourdough or gluten free toast can help absorb alcohol and toxins, line the delicate stomach and provide amino acids to help detoxify the liver.

Kombucha: Nothing beats a cold, sweet fizzy beverage after a big night out so why not ditch the soft drink and down a bottle of your favourite kombucha instead? This can help repopulate gut bacteria, settle the stomach and boost energy. Anything containing ginger and turmeric will be especially helpful for easing nausea and soothing inflammation.

Exercise (gently): we’re not talking a HIIT session at your local gym (that would be taking things too far!), but more a gentle stroll in nature or along the beach, a cool dip in the ocean or perhaps a relaxing and restorative yoga session to boost endorphins and circulation. Endorphins are your feel good hormones that can dip after a big night out so restoring them can help you feel happier and lift your spirits.

Now try doing all five and see how much better you feel!
