As the weather warms up, staying well hydrated becomes even more important, especially after exercise, time outdoors or a busy day on the go.
This simple homemade electrolyte drink combines coconut water, fresh citrus, a little natural sweetness and a pinch of sea salt to help replace fluids and key electrolytes lost through sweat.
It’s refreshing, easy to make and a great alternative to many heavily sweetened sports drinks.
Perfect served chilled over ice with fresh mint.
what you need
- 500 mL coconut water
- Juice of 1 lime
- Juice of ½ orange
- 250 mL cold water
- 1–2 teaspoons honey or maple syrup
- ½ – ¾ tsp Celtic or Himalayan salt (depending on personal taste)
- Ice
- Fresh mint, optional
what to do
1. Add the coconut water, citrus juice and cold water to a jug.
2. Stir in the honey or maple syrup until dissolved.
3. Add salt.
4. Serve over ice with fresh mint.
Why it works?
- Coconut water provides potassium and some magnesium.
- Sea salt adds sodium, which is especially important when sweating.
- Orange and lime add flavour, vitamin C and some carbohydrate.
- Honey or maple syrup provides a small amount of glucose, which can help fluid and sodium absorption during or after exercise.
